Profile

CHRISTINE HUCKINS FRANCK is an architect, educator, and author living in Denver, Colorado. She began her design practice in New York City before moving to Colorado to found and direct the Center for Advanced Research in Traditional Architecture at the University of Colorado Denver. She is co-author of Winterthur Style Sourcebook: Traditional American Rooms and author of José M. Allegue, A Builder’s Legacy. All aspects of her work are ethically focused on improving the built environment and quality of life of all individuals.

Early in her career, while living in New York City, she established her practice focusing on design and education. She had previously interned with the office of Allan Greenberg, Architect and served as the first Executive Director of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. Through the years, she has developed, directed and administered programs for institutions such as the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) and The Prince of Wales’s Foundation and held teaching appointments from the schools of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame, Georgia Institute of Technology, and University of Colorado Denver. Most recently, she founded the Center for Advanced Research in Traditional Architecture (CARTA) at the University of Colorado Denver College of Architecture & Planning and served as its first director from 2013 – 2017.

Ms. Franck currently serves or has served as trustee, advisor, or member of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) National and Rocky Mountain Chapter; the International Network of Traditional Building, Architecture and Urbanism (INTBAU); the New Urban Guild, the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture; and the Baldwin Hardware Design Council.

She has been honored for both her educational and design work with awards as diverse as a Palladio Award for new residential design, a Historic Fort Worth award for preservation, New York City’s Carnegie Hill Neighbors Enrichment Award for her Madison Avenue shopfront renovation, and the inaugural Baldwin Hardware Prize. Early in her career, HRH The Prince of Wales awarded her his first and, to date, only Public Service Award of The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment for her “outstanding contribution to the study of architecture and design.” In 2016 she was recognized with a lifetime achievement award for “fostering humane values in the built environment,” the Clem Labine Award.

Franck’s work has been published in magazines and books such as Architecture, The Guardian, Residential Architect, New Old House, Period Homes, The Classicist and exhibited at shows in America and Europe such as Buildings Made by Hand, The Art of Building Cities, A Decade of Art and Architecture, New Palladians, and at the RIBA’s “Palladian Design: The Good, the Bad, and the Unexpected.”

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia and a Master of Architecture from the University of Notre Dame.
